Bacteria are single-celled microorganisms that are found in almost every environment on Earth. They are among the simplest and most abundant forms of life, and play important roles in many ecological and industrial processes.
Bacteria are prokaryotic cells, meaning that they lack a distinct nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles found in eukaryotic cells. Instead, their genetic material is located in a single circular chromosome that is located in the cytoplasm. They are also characterized by their small size, typically ranging from 0.5 to 5 micrometers in diameter.
Bacteria are incredibly diverse and can be found in a wide range of shapes, including spherical (cocci), rod-shaped (bacilli), and spiral (spirilla). They can also exhibit a variety of metabolic pathways, allowing them to utilize a wide range of nutrients and energy sources.
While many bacteria are harmless or even beneficial to humans and other organisms, some species can cause disease and infection. Antibiotics and other treatments have been developed to combat bacterial infections, but the rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a growing public health concern.
